Abstract
The battle of a woman for escape from being subjugated is as much true in both eastern and western societies whether colonial or post- colonial, whether financially independent or dependent. As the stories of deprivation and subjugation converge at one point or the other, the films like ‘The Piano’, ‘The Ballad of Little Jo’ and ‘Water’ converge to express a shared form of experiences earned at different locations. The films might have been conceived in different locales but speak in unison as an interpretation of female experiences. The main objective of this study is to analyse the three screen narratives Water a Hindi film directed by Deepa Mehta and two English films, The Ballad of Little Jo by Maggie Greenwald and The Piano by Jane Campion from a feminist perspective and examine the experiences and transformation of female protagonists in a male dominated patriarchal social order.
