Abstract
Most of the Libraries today, offer a wide range of online services to their users. Now the internet and web technologies are not the new things to any academic hence it is time for a library to be virtual and develop its online presences in order to further facilities and enrich the educational processes. In this direction virtual libraries provides an overview of a serving the new generation users of libraries. It narrates purpose, features, functions, design and development of a virtual library and virtual library environment. Impact of the virtual Library on lifelong Learning has also been emphasized. Notably, advocates for the virtual Library of India to be hosted by the INFLIBNET.The virtual academic library, created to serve a non-traditional student population, faculty, and community, illustrates the use of measures such as the saturation rate of the student population, the percentage of bibliographic sessions and orientations compared to the number of courses offered, and website traffic patterns.
