  • Abstract:
  • In the last few years, social media has become an integral part of adolescents’ lives. It shapes their communication style, thought-sharing ability, and self-image. In the above context, this study attempts to view social media as a ‘digital mirror’ which shapes adolescents’ understanding of themselves and their interaction with other people, impacting their well-being. Using the results of recent studies conducted in India and abroad, this paper focuses on three important aspects of the problem: identity, influence, and well-being. Social media has opened many doors in terms of communication, expression, searching for interests, and contacting people. Therefore, the application of social media can help enhance the self-concept and identity of individuals. However, the mechanisms of social media, such as likes, comments, subscribers, and influencers, may escalate social comparisons and create the need to get approval from others. This research is oriented towards revealing both pros and cons of social media. On the one hand, social media is able to enhance social connections, boost confidence, and assist in developing a feeling of belongingness. On the other hand, social media contributes to the rise of excessive social comparison which, in turn, may cause various emotional difficulties among adolescents. The importance of the role of parents, teachers, and school counsellors to assist adolescents in using social networking sites responsibly and properly is addressed in this paper. Knowing these issues can help ensure adolescents grow and develop in a way that will be healthy for them in today’s digital era.
