DIGITAL PAYMENTS AND FINANCIAL INCLUSION: AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THE TRANSFORMATION OF COMMERCE IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY

  • The major step forward of information technology has brought significant changes in the functioning of modern economies. One of the most visible transformations has been seen the change from traditional cash-based transactions system towards systems of digital payments. The systems of digital payments have become an important component of contemporary commerce (i.e. trade and auxiliaries to trade) by providing faster, convenient and transparent methods of financial or monetary exchange. The increasing use of official systems of digital payments and mobile apps such as Google Pay (GPay), Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile banking, digital wallets, QR-based payments and internet banking has reassessed the relationship among consumers, businesses and financial institutions. The present study exhibits to analyse the significance of systems of digital payments in transforming commercial activities and help in strengthening the financial inclusion. The study determines the progress of digital payments, their various forms and their contribution towards improving business efficiency, customer convenience and participation of economy. It also determines the impact of digital payments on small/large businesses, e-commerce growth and entrepreneurial activities. The research is based on the collection of secondary data from academic literature, government reports, banking publications and digital economy studies. The analysis indicates that digital payment systems have become a major catalyst for commercial growth by reducing transaction barriers, providing faster, economical, improving transparency and enabling wider participation in the formal financial or monetary system. Moreover, issues such as cybersecurity threats, lack of digital awareness, technological limitations and privacy concerns continue to influence user confidence in many ways. The study concludes that digital payments are not merely alternative payment methods but represent a fundamental shift in the structure of commerce (i.e. trade and auxiliaries to trade). With appropriate and proper regulatory support, current technological advancement, digital literacy initiatives and digital payments have the potential to create a more inclusive, efficient and sustainable economic ecosystem for the whole world.
