  • Abstract:
  • The Gig Economy has emerged as an important component of contemporary labour markets, transforming the traditional relationship between workers, employers, and organisations. Digital platforms have enabled individuals to obtain income through short-term, flexible, and task-based employment in areas such as transportation, food delivery, freelancing, online education, digital services, and professional consulting. While the gig economy creates opportunities for labour-market participation and flexible employment, it also raises important questions regarding human capital development. Human capital, consisting of workers' knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, and capabilities, plays a central role in determining productivity, employability, earnings, and long-term economic development. Unlike traditional employment, where organisations frequently provide structured training and career development, gig workers are often responsible for acquiring and financing their own skills. This article examines the relationship between human capital development and the gig economy, focusing on skill acquisition, digital literacy, employability, income opportunities, platform-based learning, and the challenges associated with continuous professional development. It also discusses the role of governments, educational institutions, digital platforms, and employers in strengthening human capital among gig workers. The article argues that effective investment in transferable skills, digital competencies, social protection, and lifelong learning can help gig workers participate more productively in the changing labour market.
