  • Abstract:
  • In the last three decades, India has been facing the extreme weather conditions and anomalous seasonal weather frequency and intensity have been historical expectations. To understand the impact and trend of meteorological factor such as solar radiation, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, wind speed & wind direction and temperature, on extreme climatic conditions the rainfall and temperature of the region play an integral part of our natural environment. These elements influence the way of the life of the people in particular region. Even the surface of the land is modified mostly by the action of rainfall and temperature. The study undertaken in this project work is analyzes the rainfall, temperature and probability estimates of weekly rainfall of Pune district, study attempts analysis on variability in summer monsoon rainfall over Pune a lee side station of Western Ghats of India using data for the period 1901-2012. Rainfall anomalies over Pune examined during El Nino and La Nina years and their intensities show below(above) normal rainfall during El Nino (La Nina) years. Floods are natural risk with a very high frequency, which causes to environmental, social, economic and human losses. The floods in the town happen mainly due to human made activities about the blockage of natural drainage, haphazard construction of roads, building, and high rainfall intensity. Detailed maps showing flood vulnerability areas are helpful in management of flood hazards. Therefore, present research focused on identifying flood vulnerability zones in the Pune City using multicriteria decision-making approach in Geographical Information System (GIS) and inputs from remotely sensed imageries Rapid urbanization has resulted in less infiltration of rainwater; hence groundwater recharge potential has diminished
