Prevalence of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSDs) among Female Beauticians in Navi Mumbai.

  • Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSDs) are one of the leading occupational health concerns worldwide, often resulting from poor ergonomic practices, repetitive tasks, prolonged static postures, and extended working hours. Female beauticians are particularly susceptible due to the physically demanding and repetitive nature of their job roles. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and commonly affected regions of WRMSDs among female beauticians in Navi Mumbai, and to understand the impact of these disorders on their daily functional abilities. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 female beauticians aged 18–40 years with a minimum of 2 years of work experience in beauty salons across Navi Mumbai. Data was collected using the Modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, focusing on musculoskeletal symptoms experienced over the past 12 months and the last 7 days. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. The study found a high prevalence (94%) of WRMSDs among participants. The most commonly affected regions were the neck (47%), ankles/feet (47%), and lower back (46%), followed by knees (44%), shoulders and wrists/hands (34% each). Pain in these regions significantly impacted work performance, with 54% of participants reporting limitations in daily work activities due to musculoskeletal discomfort. The prevalence estimates fall within a 95% confidence interval of 87.4% to 97.8%. The findings highlight a significant burden of WRMSDs among female beauticians in Navi Mumbai, particularly affecting the lower back, neck, and lower limbs. Immediate ergonomic interventions, workplace modifications, and health education are essential to prevent WRMSDs and enhance occupational well-being in this vulnerable workforce.
