  • Abstract:
  • Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common gynaecological disorders affecting women of reproductive age, characterised by painful uterine cramps during menstruation. Conventional pharmacological therapies such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and hormonal agents provide symptomatic relief but are often associated with adverse effects and long-term safety concerns. In recent years, herbal antispasmodics and mineral supplementation have gained attention as safer and holistic alternatives. Herbal drugs such as Vitex agnus-castus, Zingiber officinale, Foeniculum vulgare, Matricaria chamomilla, and Curcuma longa possess proven antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activities. Magnesium, an essential mineral, plays a crucial role in smooth muscle relaxation, prostaglandin regulation, and neuromuscular function. This review explores the synergistic potential of herbal antispasmodics combined with magnesium supplementation as a novel, effective, and safer approach for the management of dysmenorrhea.
