Abstract
Effective space utilization is given prime importance in industrial design. The need of an efficient and compact material handling system in vertical direction is arising day by day which will transfer the material at higher rate than some existing material handling system. In this paper the design of an electronically operated vertical storage system is suggested. The design principle is based on the adaptation of vertical carousel system. The ‘Automated Shelves’ is a motor-driven vertical storage equipment that brings shelves up and down so that they can be easily available for the user. Design drawings were produced and components/materials selections were based on functionality, durability, cost and local availability. The system performance was tested on fabricated model. It has wide applications in material handling for industrial, domestic and commercial purpose. The concept eliminates the process of manually carrying the items, the need of the workers carrying the items and optimizes vertical space utilization.
