  • Abstract:
  • The design and development of aerospace propulsion systems requires the measurement of the surface distributions of the parameters such as pressure, temperature, strain, skin-friction and heat transfer. High enthalpy wind tunnels are mainly used to simulate the hypersonic flow of space vehicles during the re-entry into atmosphere. They have short running times of the order of few milliseconds and require sensors with very fast response time. Thin film RTD sensors offer a unique solution to most of the limitations associated with conventional heat flux sensors. This project presents the fabrication, calibration and testing of platinum thin film Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs). These sensors are obtained by depositing a thin film of platinum on the surface of a highly polished ceramic substrate. The test results will be compared with that of coaxial thermocouples.
