  • Abstract:
  • Objective: To investigate the nephroprotective activity of ethanolic extract of Morinda citrifolia leaves against acetaminophen induced nephrotoxicity in male Wistar rats. Materials & Methods: The method of nephrotoxicity study in male wistar rats were divided into four groups (n=6). Group-I normal and Group-II served as toxic controls respectively, while Group-III and Group-IV were the treatment groups which were pretretment with Morinda citrifolia ethanolic extract 250, 500 mg/kg/day, respectively for about 28 days, simultaneously each dose of acetaminophen (750 mg/kg/day) for 14 days from 15th to 28th days, urine and blood samples were collected and estimated for biochemical parameters, kidneys for histopathological studies were obtained under the inhaled ether anaesthesia. Results: Acetaminophen treatment caused nephrotoxicity was evidenced by marked elevation in blood urea, serum creatinine, serum total protein, urinary creatinine and urinary total protein and also reduced creatinine clearance. Pretreatment and Co-administration of Morinda citrifolia extract reduced the blood urea, serum creatinine, serum total protein, urinary creatinine and urinary total proteins. Apart from these histopathological changes also shown the protective nature of Morinda citrifolia extract against acetaminophen induced necrotic damage of renal tissues. Conclusion: It was observed that the ethanolic extract of Morinda citrifolia leaves conferred Nephroprotective in acetaminophen induced nephrotoxic rats.
