  • Abstract:
  • Hydrogels are polymers that have been cross-linked and contain hydrophilic groups, which allow them to absorb a lot of water. Hydrogels are a great tool for drug delivery because of their many benefits, such as their biocompatibility, low toxicity, and good swelling behaviour. However, there are certain limitations when it comes to the delivery of active pharmaceuticals through hydrogels, depending on the chemical properties of the gel-forming polymers and the administration route. In this review, the hydrogel was first classified using various techniques, such as chemical moieties, crosslinking agent behaviours, and release controller mechanism. The limitations resulting from each category were then described, and lastly, various methods to get around each of these limitations were suggested.
