This curative effect of Rauvolfia root is attributed to the presence of more than 50 different alkaloids. Some amongst them include reserpine, ajmaline, ajmalicine, rescinnamine, deserpidine, rescinnamidine, serpentine, serpentinine, yohimbine, indobine and indobinine. R.serpentina is also known to exhibit antidiuretic, anticholinergic, anticancer, antifungal, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However this plant drug also produces some unfavourable adverse effects and produces drug resistance when used for long time to treat hypertension.
