  • Abstract:
  • The existing dosage forms for the delivery of montelukast sodium are in the form of tablets and liquids for the oral route of administration. Present work aimed to overcome various disadvantages associated with this available conventional method by developing an alternative dosage form of transdermal film formulations. Selected polymers and their combinations were used to prepare the films by solvent casting technique to offer prolonged and consistent systemic absorption of the drug through intact skin. The study involves excipients screening, conducting preformulation work, formulation trials, in-process analysis and stability testing. The developed topical dosage forms were evaluated using suitable analytical techniques to ensure quality standards of the finished product, which includes weight variation, thickness, surface pH, folding endurance, drug assay, content uniformity, moisture uptake or loss, tensile strength and in-vitro drug release. The results of this work proved that developed formulations were found to be stable and excipients used were compatible with the drug to deliver the montelukast sodium in a sustained manner and possess necessary film properties for topical application. It was concluded that the developed film of montelukast sodium was cost effective, easily scalable for commercial manufacturing, promising to overcome various side effects of the oral route of administration including headache and gastrointestinal discomfort and hence improved patient compliance.
