  • Abstract:
  • Postmenopausal health demands priority in the Indian scenario due to the growing population. Most women are either unaware of or do not pay attention to the post-menopausal symptoms. Incidences of low back pain are found to be higher in postmenopausal women. Many studies have shown effectiveness of yoga in low back pain in postmenopausal women and effectiveness of core strengthening in low back pain in postmenopausal women. There are no comparative studies between the effectiveness of yoga and core strengthening in postmenopausal women with low back pain and functional disability. The goal of this study was to explore the effect of yoga and core strengthening exercises in postmenopausal women who are experiencing low back pain and have functional limitations. The comparative study was conducted over the duration of 6 months with a sample size of 50 participants selected through purposive sampling. The comparative study was conducted over the duration of six months, with a sample size of 50 participants selected through purposive sampling. The participants were selected over the basis of inclusion criteria (age range and visual analog scale) and exclusion criteria (any neurological condition, severe pain as per VAS, radiculopathy, imaging indicating spinal tumor, and infection). Participants were divided into two groups. The first group (Group1) practiced yoga protocol over the four-week intervention period, while the second group (Group2) practiced core strengthening protocol over the four week intervention period. Quantitative data were collected pre and post interventional surveys using the Visual Analogue Scale and the Oswestry Disability Index. The data was analyzed, and results indicated participants in Group1 found more significant relief than in Group2. Clinical implications of these findings suggest yoga can be a safe and effective practice in postmenopausal women.
