  • Abstract:
  • Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly becoming prime targets for cyberattacks due to their limited resources, lack of advanced security infrastructure, and often underdeveloped cyber risk management practices. As the frequency and sophistication of cyber threats continue to rise, SMEs face significant risks, including data breaches, ransomware, and financial loss, which can lead to operational disruptions or even business failure. Despite these escalating risks, many SMEs still underestimate the importance of cybersecurity, believing their size makes them less attractive targets. This research paper explores a comprehensive approach to mitigating cyber risks in SMEs by addressing their unique challenges and limitations. The study identifies common cyber threats faced by SMEs and provides a practical framework for implementing cost-effective, scalable cybersecurity measures. Key strategies discussed include strengthening basic cyber hygiene, such as enabling multi-factor authentication, regular software updates, and data encryption. In addition, the paper highlights the importance of employee training programs to prevent human errors, which are often exploited in phishing and social engineering attacks. Through an analysis of industry best practices, cybersecurity frameworks like the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and affordable technological solutions, the paper presents a tailored cybersecurity roadmap for SMEs. The findings underscore the importance of developing a proactive incident response plan and partnering with third-party service providers, such as managed security service providers (MSSPs), to fill the gap in expertise and resources. By adopting a risk-based approach and leveraging existing resources, SMEs can significantly reduce their vulnerability to cyberattacks, ensuring long-term business continuity. The research concludes by identifying opportunities for further exploration, particularly in the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in enhancing cybersecurity for resource-constrained businesses.
