  • Area and Volume of 3 dimensional objects is considered as one of the most difficult subject of mathematics. The conceptualization of area of solids like cube ,cuboid, cylinder, cone and sphere and their in-depth understanding will lead the students to attain the higher level of mathematical skill. I, as a teacher got an opportunity to teach the students of 10th class in Govt. Senior Secondary School, Ghanagughat and came across the probem of teaching area of solids in general and area of Cuboid in particular. While teaching Area and Volume of Solids to the students of 10th class. Initially I attempted to solve the questions through deductive approach using the formulae for solving the question but this came out to be a futile exercise. Afterwards, after understanding the real problem I realized that students need a concrete solution of abstract problems .3-dimensional objects were required to be shown to solve the problem of solids. It seemed very difficult to solve the problems of 3-dimensional figures with 2-dimensional diagrams. Students were exposed to learning through activities and 3 dimensional objects in such a manner that a unique model/activity was designed for solving each question. The test was subsequently designed to assess the learning ability of students. The marks obtained in post activity test were comparatively better than the previous score of pre activity test. Thus activity based method to solve area aof cuboid proved out to be successful
