  • Abstract:
  • With the slowing down of the rural economy, India urbanisation is seeing an upward trend with increasing numbers of people migrating to towns and cities in search of better economic opportunities. Unfortunately lack of proper urban planning and critical infrastructure shortages and major service deficiencies, the cities are literally falling apart. The deteriorating urban environment, high density of population and traffic congestion is choking the cities with dangerous levels of pollution. Lack of green patches that served as natural protection to control pollution is impacting the health of its urban population. Paucity of land and scarce water resources make solutions like Hydroponics a practical endeavour to reducing pollution with the added benefit of providing fresh produce to feed its local population. This paper examines how hydroponics is useful and why it should be integrated in urban planning with specific reference to India.
