Corrosion protection properties of Nerium indicium leaf extract against zinc surface in acidic medium

  • One of the most significant inhibitors of metallic corrosion is natural plant extract. Research attempts to reduce the damage produced by the corrosion process have increased in response to the corrosion of metals and their alloys. Using thermometric and weight loss methods, the study documents the corrosion inhibition capabilities of Kaner (Nerium indicium) leaf on zinc in 0.1 N HCl and 0.1 N H2SO4 solution. It was discovered that the leaf extract effectively inhibits zinc corrosion at all extract concentrations. The concentration of the leaf extract in the acidic solution determines the inhibitory effect. Mass loss measurement results show that when inhibitor concentration rises, so does inhibition efficiency. Thermodynamic consideration indicates that the adsorption of the extract is exothermic and spontaneous. Also, the adsorption characteristic of the inhibitor is consistent with the assumptions of Langmuir adsorption isotherm. From the results and findings of the study, a physical adsorption mechanism is proposed for the adsorption of ethanol extract of Kaner on zinc surface. At different temperatures of 303K, 313K, and 323K, the inhibition efficiency was extrapolated with some models. The inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in the concentration of the extract, an indication of the inhibitive property of the leaf extract. This was supported through the extrapolation of Gibbs free energy, activation energy, enthalpy, and entropy change. The thermodynamic variable shows that the mechanism of inhibition was physisorption. Thus, the present findings demonstrate a novel environmentally benign, efficient corrosion inhibitor for zinc surface protection in acidic media.
