  • Abstract:
  • In an era of rapid technological change, high technology firms must continuously innovate to sustain competitive advantage. This paper explores how strategic alliances and acquisitions enhance knowledge creation and innovation in such firms. These alliances—ranging from informal as well as formal R&D partnerships to mergers, acquisitions and equity ventures—enable firms to access complementary capabilities, reduce costs, and accelerate research outcomes. Using a case study approach, the study focuses on the chemical industry, a leading sector in R&D investment. By examining collaborative efforts, the paper evaluates the impact of partnerships on knowledge acquisition and innovation performance, highlighting alliances as critical tools for global competitiveness and adaptation in dynamic technological environments. The study reveals that it depends on the firm’s long term goals, which determines the firm’s strategy; whether they want to expand their operations and profitability by improving their research capabilities via technical alliances, or internalising other firm’s strengths by acquiring them.
