  • Abstract:
  • Shape memory polymers commonly referred to as SMPs are polymeric smart materials that have the ability to return from a deformed shape to their original or permanent shape when induced by an external stimulus. These external stimuli can be temperature change, light, moisture, electric field or magnetic field. This paper mainly focuses on the application, recent advances and future of SMPs in biomedical field. The broad overview of recent developments in SMPs shows its greater applicability in tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, regenerative medicine, orthopaedics, minimally invasive surgery etc. Utilization of shape memory polymers in surgeries and medication makes the procedures easier, quicker and accurate. The recovery period and healing period is also less.
