abstract = { Laser cutting is a popular economical non traditional manufacturing process utilized to cut various types of materials. The most extensively used lasers cutting are CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers, in which CO2 lasers are mostly used for cutting because of high power and suitable properties needed for the cutting of the materials. Aluminium alloys are widely used in the aeronautical and automotive industry. In this work, CO2 laser cutting of aluminium has been investigated.
The quality of the cut edges and the width of laser cut or kerf, are affected by the stand-off distance between nozzle and the work piece material, laser power, assist gas pressure and cutting speed. The experiment was designed and carried out on the basis of L16 Taguchi’s orthogonal array in which all the four laser cutting parameters were arranged at four levels.
A statistical analysis of the results in order for the effect of each parameter on the cutting quality has been performed. Regression analysis has been used for the development of empirical models which is capable of describing the effect of the process parameters on the quality of laser cutting.},
