  • Abstract:
  • — Lathe can be used generally for fabricating parts and/or features that have a circular cross section. A lathe is a machine tool which rotates the work piece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting, knurling, drilling, and turning with tools that are applied to the work piece to create an object which has symmetry about an axis of rotation. In ordinary lathes the face of the work piece can only be machined into plane or tapered and cannot be machined into curved shapes such as concave and convex profiles. The proposed design will enable the work piece to be machined in such a way that the faces are radius. This can be done by guiding the tool mounted on tool post. Tool post is welded on to the worm gear which is driven by a manually operated worm. The concave and convex profiles can be machined by changing the longitudinal feed of carriage, cross feed of cross slide and angular movement of tool in worm gear. This attachment can be fixed in the place of swivel base that is bolted to cross slide. This attachment can also be used to perform ordinary lathe operations such as turning, facing, thread cutting, grooving, knurling and taper turning. Thus there is no need for switching to swivel base for performing ordinary lathe operations
