  • Abstract:
  • The first line of defense against bacterial invasion in periodontal disease is provided by the epithelium, which functions as a physical barrier to separate the biofilm from the gingival tissue. Inflammation results from the disruption of the gingival epithelial barrier and the subsequent entry of exogenous pathogens into the host tissues, which leads to the development of a chronic infection. This review aims to discuss in-depth knowledge of the different types of oral epithelium, cell junctions, and cellular ultrastructure.
