The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Transforming Modern Business Practices: A Comprehensive Review

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to be a transformational force in any business and industry by increasing the levels of automation, enhancing decision-making, and improving efficiencies. This paper aims to provide an overview of 30 articles that focus on AI in business and explore AI's applications, challenges, and future directions. AI-driven technologies, including machine learning, deep learning, and robotic process automation (RPA), are now well embedded in finance, marketing, HR, and supply chain management. The 30 studies analysed in this paper identified that predictive analytics, fraud detection, customer relationship management systems, operational efficiencies, real-time decision-making, and capital management were just a few areas where AI-based interventions added value and enhanced decision-making ability. AI may not always be beneficial, as it poses some ethical issues such as algorithmic bias, security threats, and AI may impact future job configurations. The review discusses future innovations and uses of AI, as well as regulatory concerns, including governance frameworks for AI to implement ethical AI practices. Ultimately, this paper concludes that for AI to reach its optimal level of value-adding benefit for businesses, organizations will need to develop AI-human collaboration strategies, models that as much as possible are transparent in the training of the AI models (explainable AI), and establish responsible AI practices and procedures.
