  • Abstract:
  • India's groundwater problem is becoming severe. Unregulated over-extraction for agriculture, unsustainable agricultural practices, urbanization, climate change and the absence of a sound water management mechanism is one of the reasons why India’s aquifers are depleting faster than they can recharge. This has resulted in declining water tables, reduced water quality, and increased water stress, impacting food and water security. Amid all this, the one factor that is often not spoken about enough is the impact that this is having on public health in India. This paper examines how depleting water tables are hazardous for public health and warrant serious policy intervention.
