abstract = {R. K. Narayan’s narrative skills were shaped by two key influences: the traditional Indian art of storytelling and the narrative methods found in Western literature. He is a natural storyteller with little concern for intricate socio-economic topics or technical aspects of form. To him, the story itself is of utmost importance. He presents the narrative on both a superficial level, where the setting takes precedence, and a deeper level, where general truths are conveyed artistically. The tone of his storytelling fosters a sense of humor. His approach to narration is straightforward and conventional. Narayan’s fiction, while appearing simple and elusive in terms of literary theory and technique, is marked by its unique voice, blending comedy with sadness and offering philosophical insights. He is renowned for his lightness of touch and a style that is lean, lucid, undecorated, yet wonderfully expressive and full of understated surprises. Narayan’s descriptions are vivid, blending humour and irony, and are occasionally tinged with pathos. The narrative is held together by several seemingly disparate incidents rather than a well-defined plot.},
