COMPARISON OF GENERAL AND SPORTS NUTRITION KNOWLEDGE AMONG PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS

  • Nutritional knowledge is one of the factors that can lead to adopting healthy eating habits and, consequently, favoring sports performance. The study aimed to compare the nutritional knowledge and its subsections general and sports nutritional knowledge of Physical Education and Sports Science Students. A validated, translated, and adapted 30-item questionnaire was used to assess total, general nutritional knowledge (15questions), and sports nutritional knowledge (15 questions). The General nutritional knowledge and Sports Nutritional Knowledge Questionnaire was provided online using Google Forms. A researcher-built questionnaire which was developed to measure subject’s general nutrition knowledge and sports nutrition knowledge, circulated to 52 male and 44 female physical Education students and 44 Sports science females and 71 Sports science males randomly. The collected data was analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA (p<0.05). The correct response rate for the general nutrition knowledge and sport nutrition knowledge score was in Physical Education males (52; 49.60%) and females (44; 42.20%); Sports science males (71 61.20%) and females (44; 62.43%) respectively. Also mean general nutrition scores in sports science females were significantly higher than Physical Education females. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the total mean score questionnaire between Physical Education and sports science student (p<0.05). Sports science female students had higher general and sport nutrition knowledge than sports science male and physical education male and female students. Nutrition education program for Physical Education majors could be an effective way to improve general and sport nutrition knowledge.
