  • Abstract:
  • Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women globally, and early detection plays a crucial role in reducing morbidity and mortality. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a simple and cost-effective technique for early identification of breast abnormalities. The present descriptive study was undertaken to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding BSE among adolescent girls in a selected school in Thrissur. A total of 60 adolescent girls were recruited using non-probability convenience sampling. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire and an attitude rating scale.Findings revealed that 12 (20%) participants had inadequate knowledge, 39 (65%) had moderate knowledge, and 9 (15%) exhibited adequate knowledge regarding BSE. Attitude assessment showed that 1 (2%) had unfavorable attitude, 14 (23%) had moderately favorable attitude, 43 (72%) had favorable attitude, and 2 (3%) demonstrated highly favorable attitude. No significant association was found between demographic variables and levels of knowledge or attitude. An educational booklet on BSE was prepared and distributed to enhance awareness. The study emphasizes the need for strengthening adolescent health education programs focusing on breast health awareness and early detection practices.
