  • Abstract:
  • Women empowerment has emerged as a key factor in achieving equitable and sustainable development, particularly in rural India where social and economic disparities remain prominent. Empowering women involves enhancing their ability to participate actively in decision-making, improving access to education and employment opportunities, and ensuring equal representation in governance. Recognizing the importance of women’s participation at the grassroots level, the Indian Constitution has strengthened Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) as instruments of local self-government. Panchayat Raj Institutions play a pivotal role in promoting women empowerment by providing opportunities for political participation through reservation of seats, facilitating access to welfare and development schemes, and encouraging leadership among rural women. In Tamil Nadu, PRIs have contributed significantly to improving women’s awareness, confidence, and involvement in community development activities. Dharmapuri District, characterized by its predominantly rural population and socio-economic challenges, offers a relevant context to examine the role of Panchayat Raj Institutions in empowering women. This study seeks to analyse how Panchayat Raj Institutions influence women empowerment in Dharmapuri District by focusing on women’s participation in governance, access to economic and social welfare programmes, and their role in local decision-making. Understanding the effectiveness and limitations of PRIs in this regard will help in identifying measures to strengthen women empowerment initiatives at the grassroots level.
