  • Abstract:
  • Memory loss and cognitive decline are common neurological problems affecting people of all age groups, especially the elderly population. These conditions are associated with impaired learning, reduced attention, and decreased mental performance. Memory loss may occur due to aging, stress, anxiety, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, and oxidative stress. Currently available synthetic nootropic drugs such as piracetam and donepezil are used to improve memory, but they are associated with several side effects including headache, insomnia, nausea, and anxiety. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in herbal nootropic agents that are safe and effective. Bacopa monnieri (L.) Pennell, commonly known as Brahmi, is a well-known medicinal plant traditionally used in Ayurveda as a brain tonic for enhancing memory, learning, and concentration. It contains bioactive compounds such as bacosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins which are responsible for its neuroprotective and cognitive enhancing effects. The present study was aimed to evaluate the memory enhancing activity of Bacopa monnieri extract using experimental animal models. The extract was prepared using suitable solvents and evaluated for nootropic activity using behavioral tests such as Elevated Plus Maze and Morris Water Maze. The results indicated significant improvement in learning and memory parameters in treated animals. The study concludes that Bacopa monnieri possesses significant nootropic activity and can be considered a promising herbal agent for the management of memory loss.
