abstract = {The question of sexual identity and social acceptance has become an important subject in contemporary sociological discussions. In many societies, including India, individuals belonging to sexual minorities often face stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion. The present study attempts to examine the social stigma experienced by members of the gay community and the ways in which such experiences influence the process of identity formation. The study is based on a sociological understanding of sexuality and focuses on the social conditions that shape the lives of gay individuals in Indian society.
Indian society has traditionally been structured around heteronormative values where heterosexual relationships are considered normal and socially acceptable. As a result, individuals who identify as gay frequently encounter misunderstanding, prejudice, and negative stereotypes. These experiences often create difficulties in openly expressing their identity within family and social environments. At the same time, changing social awareness, the role of media, and legal developments have slowly created spaces where sexual minorities can express their identities with greater confidence.
This research adopts a qualitative approach and relies on sociological interpretations of stigma and identity. The study highlights how social attitudes, family expectations, and cultural norms influence the formation of sexual identity among gay individuals. The findings suggest that while stigma continues to affect the everyday lives of many gay individuals, the gradual growth of awareness and support networks is also helping them negotiate and affirm their identities within society.},
