  • Abstract:
  • Acne vulgaris is a common chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, affecting a large proportion of adolescents and young adults. It is characterized by lesions such as comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts, often leading to physical scarring and psychological distress. Conventional therapies, including antibiotics, retinoids, and benzoyl peroxide, are effective but associated with adverse effects like irritation, dryness, photosensitivity, and antibiotic resistance, limiting their long-term use. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in herbal and natural products as safer alternatives for acne management. Medicinal plants such as neem, tea tree oil, aloe vera, turmeric, and green tea contain bioactive compounds like flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, and alkaloids, which exhibit antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and sebum-regulating properties. These phytochemicals play a crucial role in inhibiting Cuti bacterium acnes, reducing inflammation, and promoting skin healing. Topical drug delivery systems, particularly gels, creams, and advanced nano-based formulations, offer targeted treatment with improved patient compliance and reduced systemic side effects. Emerging approaches such as nanocarriers and polyherbal formulations further enhance the efficacy and stability of herbal therapies. This review highlights the role of medicinal plants, their active constituents, mechanisms of action, and advancements in herbal topical formulations for effective and safer management of acne vulgaris.
