Whole Brain Emulation (WBE): Engineering the Mind, Breaking the Bottlenecks, and Not Accidentally Inventing Digital Slavery

  • Whole Brain Emulation (WBE) proposes a direct approach to uploaded intelligence: instead of building an artificial mind from scratch, reconstruct a biological one in software. In principle, if the brain is a physical system obeying physical laws, then its computations should be reproducible on non-biological hardware. In practice, however, WBE is less a single invention and more a pipeline of hard problems stacked: preserving neural tissue, scanning at synaptic resolution, reconstructing 3D circuitry, extracting the connectome, modeling neuronal and synaptic dynamics, running the simulation at scale, and validating whether the result is meaningfully equivalent to the original mind. This paper reviews WBE’s scientific foundations, identifies key bottlenecks (resolution limits, data scale, reconstruction error, neurochemical state, plasticity, and validation), and discusses ethical challenges such as identity continuity, rights of emulated persons, and misuse risks including coercion, replication, and surveillance. The analysis concludes that WBE appears physically plausible but technologically distant, primarily due to measurement, modeling, and verification constraints. Progress will require not only neuroscience and computing advances but also governance frameworks capable of handling the emergence of potentially conscious digital minds.
