Vistick: Advanced Artificial Intelligent Vision Stick Using IoT

  • Visual impairment continues to be one of the most significant barriers to independent mobility and safety. Traditional white canes offer basic ground-level obstacle detection but fail to identify complex hazards such as overhead obstacles, stairs, or potholes. This paper presents Vistick, an AI-powered smart vision stick designed using Internet of Things (IoT) and computer vision technologies to assist visually impaired individuals in navigating safely and confidently. The system integrates ultrasonic sensors for real-time obstacle detection, a camera module paired with the YOLOv8 deep learning model for object recognition, and a Raspberry Pi microprocessor for data processing. The device provides both haptic feedback and voice alerts to the user while a companion Guardian App allows caretakers to monitor location, battery status, and emergency alerts. Experimental results demonstrate that Vistick effectively enhances situational awareness, minimizes collision risk, and promotes independent mobility. The proposed system offers a cost-effective, scalable, and socially impactful solution to empower visually impaired individuals through technology-driven inclusion
