  • Abstract:
  • India’s retail sector, much like the rest of the world, has been experiencing a seismic shift as e-commerce continues to expand at a pace few could have predicted just a decade ago. Better internet infrastructure, the surge in smartphone usage, and the growing comfort with digital payments have collectively nudged consumers toward online platforms that deliver convenience, an expansive range of products, sharper prices, and frictionless transactions. Traditional physical stores now find themselves navigating a genuinely difficult environment — foot traffic is thinning and competition is fiercer than ever. This study sets out to understand how deeply e-commerce has affected conventional retail, looking specifically at sales figures, how people shop, workforce dynamics, and what strategic responses retailers have tried. What emerges from the data is a nuanced picture: while online retail undeniably disrupts old business models, it also pushes traditional players toward creative solutions, including omnichannel blending and thoughtful technology adoption. The core takeaway is that physical stores can still hold their own — but only by weaving digital capabilities into their everyday operations and embracing models that bridge the online-offline divide.
