abstract = {Passiflora caerulea L. is an important member of the Passifloraceae family, traditionally utilized across South America, Europe, and parts of Asia for the management of insomnia, anxiety, inflammation, and various nervous system disorders. Over the past two decades, increasing phytochemical and pharmacological investigations have highlighted the medicinal relevance of this species, particularly due to its diverse spectrum of bioactive metabolites. Recent analytical studies employing LC-MS, HPLC, and chromatographic profiling have identified flavonoids (vitexin, isovitexin, orientin, chrysin), alkaloids (harman, harmine), phenolic acids (chlorogenic and caffeic acid), and cyanogenic glycosides as the major chemical constituents responsible for its biological activities.
A growing body of preclinical evidence demonstrates significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anxiolytic, sedative, and antimicrobial properties associated with various parts of P. caerulea. These activities are largely attributed to its ability to modulate oxidative stress, suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines, and interact with neurotransmitter systems, particularly the GABAergic pathway. Despite promising pharmacological findings, current literature reveals limited standardization of extracts, inadequate dose-response studies, and a scarcity of well-designed toxicological assessments.
This review consolidates existing scientific data on the phytochemistry, pharmacological effects, and safety profile of P. caerulea, while identifying critical research gaps that must be addressed to support its future development as a standardized herbal therapeutic or nutraceutical candidate. The summarized evidence further underscores the relevance of this plant for the exploration of anti-arthritic potential, particularly in models involving oxidative stress and cytokine imbalance.},
