        abstract = {Japanese costumes represent a deep cultural heritage, embodying the nation’s artistic expression, social hierarchy, and spiritual beliefs. Among these, the kimono stands as the most iconic garment, reflecting Japan’s aesthetic values and historical evolution. This paper explores the origins, development, and symbolic meanings of Japanese traditional clothing, focusing on how they communicate identity, gender, and status. It also examines the preservation and adaptation of these garments in modern Japanese society. The methodology includes qualitative analysis through review of historical literature, visual documentation, and case studies of contemporary fashion that integrates traditional elements. Findings suggest that Japanese traditional costumes continue to influence modern fashion design globally, sustaining cultural pride while adapting to contemporary lifestyles. It is a visual language that communicates social status, occasion, season, and personal identity. The most iconic garment, the kimono, has evolved from Heian-era court robes to a symbol of national heritage. Other garments like the yukata, hakama, and haori have distinct roles in festivals, ceremonies, and martial arts. Despite the rise of Western fashion, these costumes persist in contemporary Japan, reflecting a blend of tradition and innovation. This study concludes that traditional Japanese attire serves not only as a form of dress but as a living art form those bridges the past and present.},
