Design and Implementation of an Automated Prepaid Electricity Billing System using GSM Technology

  • The rising cost of electrical energy and the operational inefficiencies of traditional billing systems remain a major concern for both utility providers and consumers. Traditional methods rely on manual meter reading, which is inefficient, prone to delays, and lacks user-controlled consumption. This research addresses these challenges through the design of an automated Prepaid Electricity Billing Meter system integrating an 8051-series microcontroller, a digital energy meter with pulse output, a GSM communication module, and an automatic relay-based load control unit. The system enables real-time monitoring of energy units, remote account recharging via SMS, and automatic power cut-off upon credit exhaustion. We review relevant literature, identify gaps such as the lack of high-accuracy metering and automated mitigation, and propose a comprehensive solution for transparent energy management. The expected outcome is a "use-as-needed" electricity scheme that eliminates manual intervention and promotes efficient energy utilization.
