Low cost Smart UV Sterilization Cabinet for clinical use

  • Hospital-acquired infections remain a major concern in clinical environments due to improper sterilization of frequently handled medical accessories. Conventional sterilization methods such as autoclaving and chemical disinfection are often time-consuming, expensive, and unsuitable for heat-sensitive equipment. This paper presents a low-cost smart UV-C sterilization cabinet designed for safe and automated disinfection of small medical instruments. The system utilizes ultraviolet radiation at 254 nm to inactivate microorganisms without heat or chemical exposure. A microcontroller-based control unit manages sterilization timing, door-interlock safety, and exposure uniformity using a motorized rotating tray. The safety mechanism automatically disables ultraviolet emission when the cabinet door is opened, preventing harmful exposure to users. Experimental evaluation demonstrates stable operation, repeatable sterilization cycles, and reliable fault detection. The proposed device provides an economical and user-friendly sterilization solution suitable for clinics, laboratories, and primary healthcare facilities.
