  • Abstract:
  • Viral marketing strategies and network effects have had a vital effect on the increasing popularity of e-commerce platforms in the emerging markets. This paper will explore the role of Flipkart in utilizing these processes to speed up the process of user acquisition, improving customer engagement, and improving the sustainability of the platform with particular reference to Nagpur, an urban environment. Based on diffusion of innovation, social contagion, and the two-sided market economics theories, the study investigates that digital word-of-mouth, referral incentives, and big-scale promotional campaigns produce self-reinforcing growth cycles. At the same time, the paper examines the relevance of direct and indirect network externalities in creating value in the platform ecosystem through amplifying the interdependencies among buyers, sellers, and service provision (suppliers). Through a qualitative case study design that follows a secondary data processing approach, the conclusion is that strategic virality and network effects integration has been able to facilitate Flipkart in Tier-2 markets penetration and the development of trust and recurrent involvement among the customers. This paper can add to the literature on the theoretical concept of platform-based competition in emerging economies and the essential importance of localised digital strategies in enhancing global business models.
