Life Sciences Education for Sustainable Development: Policy Alignment with NEP 2020 and the SDGs

  • Life sciences education plays a critical role in addressing global sustainability challenges outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rapid environmental degradation, climate change, biodiversity loss, emerging diseases, and food insecurity necessitate innovative educational frameworks integrating sustainability within life sciences curricula. In the Indian context, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes multidisciplinary learning, experiential education, and environmental awareness, making life sciences education a strategic platform for achieving sustainable development objectives. This paper examines the alignment between life sciences education, SDGs, and NEP 2020 priorities. It identifies current challenges, proposes innovative pedagogical approaches, and highlights policy strategies to strengthen sustainability-oriented science education. Integrating sustainability into life sciences education enhances scientific literacy and empowers future generations to contribute toward global and national sustainability goals.
