METHODS OF IMPROVEMENT OF SOIL BEARING CAPACITY: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY

  • The bearing capacity of soil is a critical parameter governing the safety and stability of civil engineering structures. Weak or problematic soils such as expansive clay, loose sand, and organic deposits often exhibit low shear strength and high compressibility, leading to excessive settlement or structural failure. This research paper presents a comprehensive analysis of various methods employed to improve soil bearing capacity, including mechanical, chemical, grouting, and geosynthetic techniques. The study also evaluates the effectiveness of modern reinforcement systems such as geocells and prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs). A comparative analysis of these methods highlights their applicability under different soil conditions. The findings suggest that multi-modal approaches combining mechanical confinement and chemical stabilization provide the most efficient and sustainable solutions for modern infrastructure development.
