  • Abstract:
  • The rapid proliferation of platform-based work has introduced algorithmic management as a dominant mode of labor control, fundamentally reshaping employer-employee relationships and the nature of work itself. This paper investigates the impact of algorithmic management on the future of work through a case study of Zomato, India's leading food-delivery platform. Employing a mixed-method approach, the study analyzes data from 185 delivery partners and 18 in-depth interviews with industry experts and gig workers. The findings reveal that algorithmic management, characterized by real-time performance monitoring, opaque decision-making, and incentive-driven work allocation, significantly influences worker autonomy, well-being, and earnings. While the algorithm offers efficiency and flexibility, it simultaneously creates conditions of heightened stress, perceived unfairness, and precarious employment. The study contributes to the growing discourse on the future of work by highlighting the tensions between technological optimization and human-centered labour practices, offering recommendations for more transparent and equitable algorithmic governance.
