BookLoop: An Analytical Study of a Modern Android E-book Reader Leveraging Diverse APIs and Cutting-Edge Technologies

  • This paper presents an analytical study of BookLoop, a feature-rich Android application designed for accessing and reading ebooks from Project Gutenberg. BookLoop distinguishes itself by integrating multiple external APIs, specifically GutenDex for core metadata and the Google Books API for enriched data such as synopses and page counts, which are often absent from Project Gutenberg's native metadata. The application is built using a modern Android tech stack, including Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, and Android Architecture Components, ensuring a robust, performant, and maintainable user experience. Key features include browsing over 70,000 free ebooks, an integrated EPUB reader with an in-app dictionary, text-to-speech, and highlighting capabilities, along with support for both light and dark modes. This paper details BookLoop's architecture, its innovative approach to data aggregation, the technical challenges encountered in mapping disparate data sources, and the comprehensive set of technologies employed to deliver a seamless reading experience on Android 8.0 (API 26) and above.
