  • Abstract:
  • The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into modern fabrication has fundamentally transformed manufacturing from heuristic-driven processes to intelligent, data-centric systems. In advanced fabrication environments, particularly additive manufacturing (AM), complex thermo-physical phenomena such as melt pool dynamics, rapid solidification, and residual stress formation introduce significant process uncertainty. Recent developments in Machine Learning (ML), Computer Vision, Digital Twins, and Reinforcement Learning (RL) enable real-time sensing, predictive modelling, and closed-loop control of these processes. This paper presents a comprehensive and technically detailed review of AI integration in fabrication, emphasizing process-level optimization, in-situ monitoring, and intelligent decision-making. Key application domains such as additive manufacturing, smart quality assurance, and material discovery are critically analysed. Furthermore, limitations related to data scarcity, model transferability, and interpretability are discussed. Emerging paradigms including Edge AI and Industry 5.0 are explored to highlight the transition toward fully autonomous and self-optimizing manufacturing ecosystems.
