  • Abstract:
  • Rapid growth in vehicle population has resulted in increased traffic congestion, accidents, and environmental pollution, particularly noise pollution caused by unnecessary honking. In conventional vehicles, horn usage and headlight control depend entirely on manual operation by the driver, which often leads to improper usage. Excessive horn usage contributes to environmental disturbance, while improper headlight intensity during night driving creates glare that affects the visibility of oncoming drivers and increases the risk of accidents. Therefore, there is a strong need for intelligent vehicle systems capable of automatically controlling these functions to improve safety and comfort. This paper presents the design and development of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart horn and adaptive headlight control system aimed at improving driving safety and reducing noise pollution. The proposed system integrates ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection and light-dependent resistor (LDR) sensors for measuring ambient light intensity. A microcontroller unit processes sensor data and controls the horn and headlight system based on predefined logic conditions. The smart horn activates only when necessary, reducing unnecessary noise, while the adaptive headlight system automatically switches between high and low beams depending on environmental lighting conditions and incoming vehicle presence. The developed system was implemented using embedded hardware components and tested under different driving conditions such as low-light environments and obstacle proximity scenarios. Experimental observations demonstrate improved safety, reduction in unnecessary horn usage, and effective headlight beam adjustment. The proposed system is economical, reliable, and suitable for integration into modern smart vehicles and intelligent transportation systems.
