  • Abstract:
  • The presence of post-formed circular openings in reinforced concrete (RC) beams, often introduced to accommodate utility services, significantly alters the stress distribution and reduces shear capacity. This structural vulnerability has been widely documented, with researchers reporting increased crack propagation and premature shear failure in beams with openings. Traditional strengthening methods, such as steel jacketing and concrete encasement, have shown limited effectiveness due to added weight, corrosion issues, and construction complexity. In recent decades, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) systems have emerged as efficient alternatives, offering high strength-to-weight ratios and durability. Among these, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) have demonstrated superior performance in enhancing shear resistance and restoring load capacity. Experimental studies highlight the influence of parameters such as opening size and location, fiber orientation, and bonding techniques on strengthening efficiency. Comparative investigations consistently show CFRP outperforming conventional methods, though challenges remain regarding installation quality and long-term performance. The reviewed literature underscores the need for further experimental evaluation of RC beams with post-formed circular openings strengthened using CFRP, particularly to address gaps in understanding failure modes and service behavior.
