  • Abstract:
  • Indian retail market is currently one of the most vibrant and competitive markets whereby the organized retail is gaining considerable momentum over the last ten years. Some of the leading competitors, DMart and Reliance Smart Bazaar have carved their niche dominance by focusing on the value-sensitive Indian client through their very different modes of operation. This research paper provides a comparative study of the operations strategies that these two retail giants use and how their operational decisions give them competitive advantage. Based on a mixed-method approach that entails the analysis of secondary financial data with the qualitative commentary by industry professionals, the study examines the main aspects of operations such as store expansion strategies, supply chain management, the development of own labels, and adaptation to disruption in quick- commerce. The results show that the disciplined cluster-driven expansion and lean operations of DMart have led to high levels of profitability where average profit per store is about 7 crore dollars as opposed to Reliance Smart Bazaar profit per store of 0.64 crore. Yet, the integrated ecosystem strategy and pan- India growth leadership of Reliance Smart Bazaar puts the company on the path of scale benefits in the long term.
