The Role of Generative AI in VFX and Animation: Creative Possibilities, Workflow Transformation, and Industry Implications

  • Generative Artificial Intelligence has rapidly emerged as one of the most transformative technologies in the creative industries, particularly within the domains of Visual Effects (VFX) and animation. This research paper explores how generative AI tools, including large language models, diffusion models, neural radiance fields, and video synthesis platforms, are reshaping the way films, television shows, advertisements, and interactive media are produced. The study investigates the creative possibilities unlocked by these technologies, the degree to which they are transforming traditional production workflows, and the broader implications for artists, studios, and the industry at large. Through a combination of qualitative analysis, review of industry case studies, and examination of primary literature, this paper argues that generative AI does not simply automate existing processes but fundamentally expands what is visually possible while simultaneously raising critical questions about authorship, labour displacement, artistic identity, and regulatory oversight. The findings suggest that the industry is at a pivotal juncture where thoughtful adoption of AI tools, guided by human creative intent, has the potential to democratise high-quality visual storytelling without eroding the value of skilled human craftsmanship.
